2023-2028 trial participants: observations start on April 1st!
Results from the MyGardenOfTrees pilot trials show that seed germination and early seedling survival vary strongly among micro-gardens, even within the same climate region. Much of this variation appears to be linked to fine-scale environmental differences, including local soil conditions. Our analyses identified soil properties such as nitrogen content and clay fraction as important predictors of germination success, alongside climate and provenance effects. Collecting soil samples from each micro-garden will therefore help us better understand why some seedlings establish successfully while others do not, and improve predictions of which seed sources are best suited to different local environments under future climate change.
Each sampling kit includes:
1 PVC cylinder (10 cm diameter x 10 cm length)
1 small wooden board
4 plastic bags
4 labels with your garden ID and block number.
A hammer: to hammer the PVC cylinder into the ground until fully inserted
Gardening gloves: to remove the top 2–3 cm of soil
A garden shovel or trowel: to lift the cylinder out of the soil
When you are ready with soil sampling, please let them dry in a cool, dry place. After sealing the plastic bags of each block, please put all four samples into the sealable plastic bag that contained the plastic cylinder and wooden block and close it. Then send the samples to national contact points, cooperating research institutes.
