2023-2028 trial participants: autumn observations start on September 1st!
Macro-gardens are traditional common garden trials where seeds are grown to seedlings in a nursery. After 2 to 3 years, seedlings are transplanted to an open-air test site and monitored for several years. These trials will provide complementary data to the micro-garden trials.
25 macro-gardens have been established in spring 2024 across Europe with the participation of universities, research institutes and nurseries.
All macro-gardens participants follow the same protocol, although there are some deviations at the nursery stage. Discover the workflow.
Have you transplanted your seedlings from the nursery to the common garden?
Share the garden conditions and observations using this data template!
The template contains three sheets:
garden metadata, one row per garden, including site conditions and the experimental design that was actually implemented
establishment data, one row per family, including the number of seedlings transplanted
survival data, one row per individual seedling, including survival status and, where available, block, row and column position
As planned, Abies seedlings can be transplanted from the nursery to the common garden in autumn 2026 or spring 2027.
To prepare the site-specific designs, please complete this questionnaire by 30 September and perform the final nursery observations (see below).
IMPORTANT: The questionnaire requires a Google login. We chose this option so that you can start the questionnaire, return to it later if you need to look up information, and upload images or shapefiles of the available planting area directly to our shared Drive.
We will prepare the designs during October and aim to share them in early November.
