Germination and Survival
2023-2028 trials: monitoring seed germination and seedling survival
Which smartphone tool can I use to send my observations?
For Android phones
Install ODK Collect and follow the instructions on this page to open the form
For iPhones and those who wish to enter their observations on a computer
Fill in the form with your observations: https://enketo.ona.io/x/cQoFecPm
Please refresh the page regularly when opening in case of updates
As with the SetUpMyGarden form, you will need to send a separate form for each block, for a total of four forms for your garden.
How to prepare to go to the field?
make sure your mobile phone is fully charged. If you have a power bank, take it with you!
make sure you open the webform still at home, with stable internet connection, before going to the field!
enable the geo location on your phone!
take with you a kneeling pad, you will be on your knees a lot to make the observations!
count about 30 minutes per block, so overall 2 hours for making all the observations for your micro-garden
Observations are made through the mesh of the seed protectors, do not remove them!
When should I start and how often should I observe?
We recommend that you start the observations as soon as possible. The winter was very warm and the first germinations are nearly one month advance in comparison with the 2021-2023 pilot trails! In the spring seedlings develop rapidly, so we kindly request that you send your observations once a week until the end of May. The time effort will vary depending on the germination rate in your garden. If you think it will be challenging to maintain regular observations, consider already asking the help of a colleague, friend, or family member to ensure the consistency of monitoring.
The frequency of monitoring will be less intense for the rest of the growing season. We kindly ask that from the beginning of June, you send your observations once every 3 weeks.
Regular observations allow us to track and compare the development of different genetic origins!
